Biografia:

Esse quinteto americano foi rotulado, inicialmente, como participante do movimento "No Depression", desencadeado por novas bandas de country rock no começo dos anos 90, visando a evitar a melancolia e o sentimentalismo associados ao gênero, mas mantendo suas tradições musicais.

A Wilco surgiu com a extinção da Uncle Tupelo, uma banda com inclinações musicais parecidas e que também mereceu o respeito da crítica ao longo da sua existência. Jeff Tweedy (nome verdadeiro: Jeffrey Scott Tweedy, nascido em 25 de agosto de 1967, em  Belleville, Illinois, EUA; vocais e guitarra) é/foi o motor criativo por trás dos dois grupos (no caso da Uncle Tupelo, dividia a criação com Jay Farrar, que fez sucesso posteriormente encabeçando a Son Volt); suas canções, de maneira geral, alcançaram uma universalidade e um envolvimento que lembram um pouco a Sebadoh.

A Wilco se agrupou em torno dos companheiros da Uncle Tupelo: John Stirratt (nascido em 26 de novembro de 1967, em Nova Orleans, Luisiana, EUA; baixo), Ken Coomer (bateria) e Max Johnston (multi-instrumentista). Seu primeiro disco, "A.M.", lançado em 1995, soava como a antiga banda, mas vendeu pouco. No álbum seguinte, "Being There", Jay Bennett, da Titanic Love Affair e com menor vocação para o country tradicional, assumiu o lugar de Johnston. A banda concordou em receber menos direitos autorais para facilitar o lançamento do disco duplo, e Tweedy ganhou o aplauso dos críticos, que compararam o álbum a "Exile On Main Street", da Rolling Stones. Dessa vez, a maior parte do material brotou sob a inspiração do nascimento do filho de Jeff, Spencer Miller Tweedy. Disse o compositor à revista Billboard, em 1996: "Foi realmente muito positivo, pois pude entender, de verdade, o significado do nascimento".

Tweedy, sempre prolífico, também gravou dois discos com a Golden Smog, uma banda paralela que envolveu, entre outros, integrantes dos grupos Jayhawks e Soul Asylum.

Em 1998, a Wilco trabalhou com Billy Bragg, cantor e compositor inglês, no aclamado disco "Mermaid Avenue", acrescentando melodias para as letras escritas por Woody Guthrie, um lendário músico folk americano (um segundo álbum, nos mesmos moldes, foi lançado dois anos depois). Em contraposição, o disco posterior do grupo, "Summer Teeth", impregnou-se da suntuosa sonoridade pop de sintetizadores, mellotrons e metais.

Apesar das resenhas elogiosas aos seus dois últimos álbuns, a banda deixou a Reprise Records em agosto de 2001, após divergências sobre as ousadas texturas musicais planejadas para o seu próximo disco. À notícia somou-se a despedida de dois membros do grupo: Bennett, compositor e multi-instrumentista, e Coomer, substituídos, respectivamente, por LeRoy Bach (que já havia participado de "Summer Teeth") e Glen Kotche. A banda disponibilizou o material contestado no site de Tweedy antes de assinar com a Nonesuch Records, filiada à Warners, para o lançamento do álbum. Ironicamente, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" mostrou-se o disco mais enfaticamente enaltecido e também o mais bem-sucedido comercialmente até então.

As férteis sessões de gravação mereceram registro no excelente documentário "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart", dirigido por Sam Jones.

No mesmo período, Tweedy compôs a música para o filme Chelsea Walls (nota minha: no Brasil, Dramas e Sonhos), de Ethan Hawke, e colaborou com o grupo Loose Fur, integrado por Jim O'Rourke (nascido em 18 de janeiro de 1969, em Chicago, Illinois, EUA), mixador do álbum "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot", e Kotche. A Wilco também gravou em conjunto com a Minus 5 o disco "Down With Wilco: A Tragedy In Three Halfs", lançado em 2003.
O álbum ulterior da Wilco precisou ser adiado enquanto Tweedy reabilitava-se do vício de analgésicos, contraído em razão da incapacitante enxaqueca sofrida na maior parte da sua vida adulta. Mesmo assim, "A Ghost Is Born", de 2004, já com a presença do novo tecladista, Mikael Jorgensen, assinalou outro triunfo artístico; O'Rourke, coprodutor do disco, incentivou Tweedy & Cia. à elaboração de um formato sonoro menos convencional do que o country rock básico apresentado nos álbuns anteriores.

E isso se percebe, facilmente, nos 15 minutos da vagarosa harmonia de "Less Than You Think" e no estilo experimental da guitarra jazzística em "Spiders (Kidsmoke)".
Mais tarde, em 2004, o guitarrista de jazz rock Nels Cline (nascido em 4 de janeiro de 1956, em Los Angeles, Califórnia, EUA) e o multi-instrumentista Pat Sansone (nascido em 21 de junho de 1969, em Meridian, Mississippi, EUA) vincularam-se à banda. Ambos apareceram no álbum "Kicking Television", gravado ao vivo em maio de 2005 no Vic Theater, em Chicago, Illinois, EUA. O disco seguinte, "Sky Blue Sky", registrado em estúdio, evidenciou um surpreendente retorno ao som mais conservador da metade dos anos 90 (The Encyclopedia Of Popular Music.
