Biografia:
Esse aclamado grupo norte-americano surgiu no final dos anos 90 como um bando de roqueiros sulistas impetuosos, claramente inspirados em Lynyrd Skynyrd, Neil Young e Rolling Stones. A história da banda começou em meados dos anos 80, na Universidade de North Alabama, em Florence, Alabama, EUA, quando Patterson Hood (filho de David Hood, renomado baixista de estúdio da Muscle Shoals) aproximou-se do seu colega guitarrista Mike Cooley. A dupla formou a banda post-punk Adam' House Cat, mas não conseguiu causar impacto além do circuito local de casas noturnas. Após vários anos separados, Hood e Cooley reuniram-se em Athens, Geórgia, EUA, em meados dos anos 90, e formaram a Drive-By Truckers em 1996, com John Neff (steel guitar), Adam Howell (baixo), Matt Lane (bateria) e Barry Sell (bandolim) fechando o lineup.

A banda rapidamente tratou de recuperar o tempo perdido sem gravar, lançando, em 1998, o divertido "Gangstabilly", porém sua crescente popularidade e a agenda cada vez mais lotada fragmentaram o lineup original. Sell, Neff, Howell e Lane saíram, com pequenos intervalos entre o primeiro e o último, ficando com Hood e Cooley a tarefa de recrutar Rob Malone (baixo) e Brad Morgan (bateria) para ajudá-los a gravar o segundo disco do grupo, "Pizza Deliverance". Um excelente disco ao vivo, "Alabama Ass Whuppin'", confirmou a potencialidade do novo time.

O conceitual disco duplo "Southern Rock Opera", de 2001 (primeiro do novo milênio), baseou-se vagamente em torno da carreira da Lynyrd Skynyrd (uma ideia da banda cozinhada em banho-maria por vários anos), e chamou a atenção pela soma de clichês do gênero. Malone largou o baixo para municiar a banda com mais uma guitarra, e Earl Hicks, parceiro de longa data do grupo, substituiu-o na seção rítmica. Mas Malone acabou se retirando após o lançamento de "Southern Rock Opera", e Jason Isbell (nascido em 1 de fevereiro de 1979, em Green Hill, Alabama, EUA), cantor, compositor e guitarrista, entrou no seu lugar. Na sequência, a banda assinou com a Lost Highway, subsidiária da Universal Records e especializada em country alternativo, que relançou "Southern Rock Opera" no ano seguinte.

Embora possuísse material para outro disco, a Lost Highway dispensou a banda anteriormente à materialização do álbum. O selo The New West acolheu a Drive-By Truckers e editou, no verão de 2003, o primoroso "Decoration Day". Shonna Tucker sucedeu Hicks em "The Dirty South", de 2004, disco que marcou o surgimento de Isbell como compositor, destacando-se as suas canções "The Day John Henry Died" e "Danko/Manoel", um tributo à The Band. O álbum posterior, "A Blessing And A Curse", de 2006, abafou o southern rock em prol de uma abordagem simplificada, reminiscência das gravações da Faces no início dos anos 70.

John Neff, membro original da banda, colaborou no álbum e mais tarde excursionou com o grupo. Em abril de 2007, Isbell decidiu seguir carreira solo, e Neff então reinstalou-se no lineup.
