Biografia:
A La's surgiu por obra do artista e músico Mike Badger (nascido no dia 18 de março de 1962), na cidade de Liverpool, Merseyside, Inglaterra, no ano de 1984. Todavia, a saída de Badger, em 1986, deixou a banda constituída pelo compositor Lee Mavers (nascido no dia 2 de agosto de 1962, em Huyton, Liverpool, Inglaterra; guitarra e vocal), John Power (nascido no dia 14 de setembro de 1967, em Liverpool, Lancashire, Inglaterra; baixo), Paul Hemmings (guitarra) e John Timson (bateria). As primeiras fitas demos do grupo levaram-no a ser contratado pela Go! Discs em 1987. Depois de "Way Out", um single de estreia bem-recebido, de inspiração sessentista, gravado com mestria e sem muito esforço, a La's demorou um ano para lançar o admiravelmente melódico "There She Goes". Quando o disco também galgou as paradas, a banda, para desilusão geral, trancafiou-se no estúdio durante dois anos para aperfeiçoar as faixas do seu primeiro disco longo.

E o lineup mudara: o irmão de Lee, Neil (nascido em 8 de julho de 1971, em Huyton, Liverpool, Inglaterra), assumiu as baquetas e o guitarrista Cammy (nome verdadeiro: Peter James Camell, nascido em 30 de junho de 1967, em Huyton, Liverpool, Inglaterra), ex-Marshmellow Overcoats, ingressou na banda. Nesse ínterim, o single "There She Goes" tornou-se campeão de vendas no circuito underground, tendo recebido sucessivos relançamentos no espaço de dois anos (depois surgiu outro single, "Timeless Melody"). No final de 1990, "There She Goes" chegou ao Top 20 do Reino Unido. E no mesmo mês apareceu o disco "The La's", uma coleção estimulante de canções equiparadas em qualidade, e não faltou quem dissesse que o álbum suplantou, em impacto, o festejadíssimo debute da Stone Roses. A desnecessária comparação pode ser atribuída à truculência de Mavers perante a imprensa, ao insultar, verbalmente, a Go! Discs por insistir no lançamento do disco e renegando seu conteúdo: "Esse é o pior LP que eu já escutei". O cotejo com as melhores bandas dos anos 60, notadamente Byrds e Beach Boys, proveio da obsessão da La's por instrumentos genuínos, visando à execução de uma sonoridade primitiva e autêntica.

Após o lançamento de "Feelin", um EP montado com canções do disco, a banda passou a gravar músicas para um novo álbum, tendo excursionado – América e Japão – durante quase todo o verão de 1991. Pouco se ouviu falar dela nos quatros anos seguintes, o que não foi surpresa para quem já estava familiarizado com o perfeccionismo de Mavers em relação ao trabalho de estúdio. Entretanto, os adiamentos mostraram-se insuportáveis para Power, que saiu para formar a altamente exitosa Cast (Mavers expressou, posteriormente, uma forte aversão pela banda do seu ex-parceiro). De volta ao notoriamente isolado território da La's, rumores continuaram circulando, envolvendo procedimentos desatinados e toxicodependência. Uma colaboração com Edgar Summertyme, da Stairs, mereceu elogios, mas explicações públicas eram sonegadas.

Mavers participou de uma apresentação acústica em 1995, com Paul Weller, mas saiu-se tão mal que acabou desplugado no meio do show. Em abril, Mavers concedeu entrevista à revista New Musical Express, falando sobre o "segundo" disco da La's. As gravações ocorreram num estúdio pertencente a Rat Scabies, da Damned, localizado na zona oeste de Londres, com Mavers tocando todos os instrumentos. Previsivelmente, o material ali registrado permaneceu incógnito.

No começo de 2005, para grande espanto da maioria dos analistas musicais, Mavers e Powers anunciaram que estavam reformulando a La's, para uma série de apresentações ao vivo durante o verão (The Encyclopedia Of Popular Music.
